[Clicky clicky to see this post with the cuts hiding things!]

My policy on how I do my recs (including for things like warnings and spoilers) can be found at [my policy post about my recs], for those interested.

I won the services of two podficcers, [livejournal.com profile] lunchy_munchy and [personal profile] via_ostiense, during the first round of the [livejournal.com profile] help_japan auction. And once the podfics started arriving in my inbox, I though, 'Oh, hey, wouldn't it be cool if I wrote up recs for these as they came in and as I listened to them?' The answer to that is, 'Obviously, yes!' But that raises the question: 'Did I do that?', to which the answer is obviously 'hahhahahaa, you must be new here if you think there was a snowball's chance of me following through on that.' But I'm going to count it as a partial victory, because there are still stories to be podficced, so I'm at least a little bit on top of things. Ish. Sorta? Eh, close enough!

As I starting thinking on this rec set, I noticed that there were other fanworks which just kept creeping in round the edges. And in fine Fishly fashion, I decided to roll with that. So what we have here is each podfic recorded for me paired with another fanwork(s) in some manner which I swear makes sense to me! :D I've used horizontal rules to separate each set visually because I like imposing order.

'Dear Kunsel' and 3 other sets )

'Flatmate Wanted' and 3 other sets )

'The Care and Feeding of Tiny Humans (and slightly larger Time Lords)' and 1 other set )

'World Domination Is Harder Than It Looks' and 1 other set )

'Redemption Song' and 'You're Gonna Make it After All' as well as 3 other sets )

If you'd like to see this rec set with all cuts intact (nicely hiding everything), clicky clicky: [This rec set with cuts intact].

I am immensely, totally, completely, terribly, horribly, and utterly sorry that this has taken so long in coming. I can only offer my apologies and hope that the existence of a rec set does something to make up for it.

And actually, it isn't even a full rec set *facepalm* It's the first half of one though! That has to count for something, as does the fact that it's so bleeding long that it's in two LJ posts, right? (To be honest, I'm not sure if that's a positive or a negative at this point...) The rest of the rec set will be up at some indeterminate time in the future and will be linked here when it exists.

So at long last, I present you with:

Part I*.a** of II: Harry Potter fic recs since HBP(ish)

*because otherwise it would have taken even longer and been even longer
**OMFG, what the fuck, I had to split this up into two posts to fit in LJ's character limits, I'm pretty sure this means I fail at something. Probably knowing when to shut up? *facepalm of ridiculousness*

The prompt for this rec set went something like:
(begin prompt)
Requirements:
Harry Potter fandom; about Harry Potter's generation; very strong preference for fanfic rather than other forms of fanwork; really good writing; written since the publication of HBP, or only just a bit before [for WIPs, the completion date was used ~Fish].
Likes:
threesomes; UST and the resolution thereof; teamwork and friendships; both low-key and angst (in their separate ways); medium and long stories preferred but the elegance of a character glimpse or a sharp what-if also appreciated; gen is fine; all gender permutations of romance and sex are fine.
Dislikes:
spoilers for the story being recced; 7th year fics.
Do not includes:
incest, chan, bestiality.
(end prompt)

The British dates of publication of the HP books )

*drumroll* And now onto the recs proper! *drumroll*

Harry Potter. Fic. And more! oooooh! )

This rec set is continued on in the next post: [constellations of fanworks (or 'An orgy of storytelling'. Which is different than 'storytelling of orgies', FYI.)]

Once upon a time, a long time ago, [livejournal.com profile] vibrantharmony bought my rec set services for [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti. I was given the following prompt:
begin quote Could I get a multifandom rec list? I'm into Merlin, Psych, and SGA (and Smallville and Doctor Who, from your minor list), so any combination from those fandoms would be awesome. As for a prompt, I love funny fics, not crackfic necessarily but more just amusing things or unusual situations. end quote

And here, only an age later, is that rec set. I have at least a few recs in all of the listed fandoms and I threw in some crossovers for good measure. This is mostly fic with the occasional podfic. I am very very sorry that this has taken this long to be finished! I hope you find some new friends in this batch! Thank you for your donation!

You may have noticed that this isn't Psych fic. That's because I'm, well, flaky and also still recovering from the pre-holiday-time rush. I'm still hoping to have it finished before I start my next Psych fic (that'd be by mid-Jan), but we'll see. But in celebration of the fact that my brain is currently half-functional I decided to give you a rec list composed of things that I don't normally rec. Whee? This is perhaps a bit more scattered than one of my normal sets, but then again, my recs are normally fairly scattered, so maybe it's just average :)

Not Fanfic Things
Pro-fic things that you might like! )

Canon things
two episodes which satisfy my fannish heart, plus reviews thereof. AND! The ever-important question of 'what episodes satisfy your fannish heart'? )

Meta
This is one new thing and two old things which I have previously recced on my journal but haven't put here (as I haven't decided what my policy is on reccing meta here, especially stuff that properly speaking isn't fannish meta so much as cultural meta, which all of these are).

three links to cultural meta )

podbang (long podfics), an SPN-crossover comment-fic meme, and a Psych fic fest )

Completely unrelatedly, I have a [DreamWidth] invite. Would anyone like it?

As promised, this set is Star Trek Reboot fic! (Um, and two TOS fics. I can't ever seem to follow my own rules, can I?) This isn't a masterlist of recs for this fandom because that would be even longer than this set is and this set is already half again as long as I had intended. Next up is Shawn/Gus (Psych)!

I offered recs to [livejournal.com profile] pixiequeen10thk because she's just come into SPN fandom and I've been here a while. She asked for long, plotty stories (with the occasional sex scene), happy endings are awesome (but crying on the way is permissible), prefers Dean/Castiel and is squicked by incest.

This rec list actually gave me a bit of trouble as I had less overlap between her preferences and fics I read/liked than I had expected. Part of that is I think of angels as sexless beings and thus haven't read very much Dean/Castiel (and what I do like within that pairing isn't likely to be a favourite of a D/C shipper) but another part is certainly that I seem to collect a high percentage of crack/humour in this fandom compared to fandom standard. Anyway, I hope you enjoy at least some of what I have here!

a dozen-ish fics, 1 podfic, 1 art, 3 crossovers (SGA, Criminal Minds, Blade Runner). )

Theme: Under the Influence! Possessions and going evil! Reposting of my recs from [livejournal.com profile] spngenlove week 13. [First day of posting] and [the 'under the influence' tag].

I had thought that my previous set of recs exhausted the Halloween-y fics I've read in this fandom, but evidently not. There's an absolutely ridiculous number of fics here. (New challenge to self: be roughly this prolific in reccing things in other fandoms too.) I'd say half-ish of these are on-theme, possibly more if you include the stories involving ghosts. Some of these I really don't want to spoil the reveal, so my comments+author's summary might not be enough to specify which story they are. In those cases, I've included a 'the one where' bit, where I roughly summarise the story's key points for myself. If you adore fic spoilers, feel free to read them.

Week 5 theme: John. [Day 1 of posting.]

Most of these are off-theme. Since I didn't have very many John-centric recs I finished a number of half-finished recs I had lying about from previous weeks.

Three fics, all SPN. )

Week 9 theme: Hunting Community. [Day 1 of posting.]

Most of these are probably off-theme by a strict definition, but my brain kept trying to define 'community' to include them. So I threw up my hands and recced regardless.

Look what I found lying around in my 'to be posted' folder!

I have a shiny new fandom and it makes me ever so happy. So now I shall share it with you!

*offers up Leverage*

*you may commence with the ooh-ing and aaaah-ing now*

*everyone ooh's and aaah's*

The show is Ocean's 11 crossed with The A Team and Robin Hood as a TV show. If you actually know anything about the topic of the week, you'll likely find something that makes you yell at the screen 'it doesn't work like that!', but that's okay, you're not watching it for accuracy, anyway. You're watching it because there's loads of great banter and lots of silly faces.

Sidenote about episode ordering-- evidently S1 episodes were shown out of chronological order on TV, but they're in the right order on the DVDs. So depending on which scheme for numbering the episodes the author uses, an episode number might refer to one of two episodes. In cases where it's obvious which episode the author meant, I'll add the name of the episode. If I have to refer to a list of episodes to figure out the relevant episode, well, that's (a) clearly not much of a spoiler and (b) too much work. In that case, I'll just report the episode number as given by the author.

Character list/description. Cut for spoilers for 'The Lost Heir Job' (aka the episode at the end of the summer season of season 2.) )

My policy on how I do my recs (including for things like warnings and spoilers) can be found at [my policy post], for those interested.

Ten billion Leverage fics. Or maybe only 17. I'm not exactly sure, I think I lost track around number six. )

Leverage seems to get lots of crossovers. Some of it seems to be the shared last names thing (Spencer seems to be popular on TV, which gets you Psych and NCIS, at least), some of it is the "we're both running cons" thing (that gets you SPN and Psych and the Stargates*), and then there's the "we're running a con and the law notices to some degree" (which gets you every procedural show ever, plus the Stargates). And then there's whatever other crossover the author can make work.

*not that the Stargates are running cons so much as they are full of massive secrecy and bad cover stories, which just happens to smell the same as running a con.

Crossovers! SPN, SGA, and Psych. Only a half dozen thousand fics this time. (Give or take a bit) )

Hmmm, looking over this rec list I can spot some themes that evidently tickle my fancy for this show. Also, where are the longer fics? Is it just that the fandom's new (this is by far and away the earliest I've ever gotten into a fandom) and they haven't had time to be written yet, or am I not finding the longer works, or is Leverage tending to produce shorter stories?

Short podfics are easy to overlook but often can be great. If you line up several of them, they're an excellent way to pass a short trip without worrying that you'll only be half-way through by the time you arrive. But I think listeners are sometimes wary of downloading the very short podfics, because the effort to length ratio is too large. So! Here's some great short podfics!

5 podfics, all under ten minutes, in SGA, Bones, Doctor Who, Discworld, Torchwood, Harry Potter, and Supernatural (yay for cross-overs!) )

Reposting my recs from this week's [livejournal.com profile] spngenlove. I only recced a few stories due to lack of time and they've all already been posted on the comm, so I'm duplicating them here now rather than on Sunday.

Week 2 theme: Celebrating Sammy
[Link to first day of recs]

3 fics: one SPN/SGA, two SPN

Title: Younger Son
Author/Artist: [livejournal.com profile] maychorian
Rating: PG/K+
Length/Word Count: 4828 words total (in two LJ posts)
Warnings/Spoilers: no warnings, spoilers for the pilot episode of both SPN and Stargate: Atlantis.
Summary: McKay told him not to go in that room, but John Sheppard is at least half cat, with the same curiosity problem. Meanwhile, there's something in Sammy Winchester's closet.
Reccer's Comments: I've always been interested in how/why Sam decided to leave the family business and this story posits a believable reason. Plus, I'm an absolute sucker for SPN/Stargate crossovers and this is a treat with good characterisations for both shows.
Sequel/related: The author also has some great Jack O'Neill & Dean fic at her [Jackndean! tag].

These next two combined say about 95% of what I really want to say about Sam at Stanford and you should absolutely read both of them if you pay any attention to SPN at all.

Title: Nowadays
Author/Artist: [livejournal.com profile] celtic_cookie
Rating: G
Length/Word Count: 1016
Warnings/Spoilers: none, none
Summary: Sam blends in.
Reccer's Comments: Sam trying to fit in, before/during Stanford and on the road again with Dean after Stanford. This feels very real to me. I loved that the Stanford section felt a bit off and the back-on-the-road-with-Dean section felt like slowly coming home. My favourite line (which guts me every time I read it) is: Excised 'y'all' forcibly from his vocabulary and replaced it with words like 'excised'.

Title: no one knew me, look right through me (the dreams in which i'm dying are the best i've ever had)
Author/Artist: [livejournal.com profile] unperfectwolf
Rating: PG
Length/Word Count: 1600 words
Warnings/Spoilers: none, none
Summary: There are some things the kids at Stanford knew about Sam Winchester, and some they didn't.
Reccer's Comments: A lovely character study of a Sam at Stanford who hasn't shed all of his habits from the first eighteen years of his life. As the author says, "because [S]am was gone for four years, and even he's not that good of actor." Pull quote: No one knew much about Sam Winchester. They knew little bits and pieces, like that he ran every morning and worked out every evening, though never in a gym. They knew he ate like it was his last meal all the time and that he had scars in the weirdest shapes with no tale to go along with nearly any of them.
Reccer's Caveats: Mentions made of Sam dating Jess.

As always, please point out corrections/additions (especially podfics or other transformative works) to what I've written here.

(This is actually the second rec set I ever put together, so it should be further back in the archives, but I accidentally overlooked it when I was importing things. Ooops.)

I'm quite enjoying myself watching random episodes of SG1. Is a bit of a change from the SGA stuff I've been dinking around with lately. And so now I shall give you recs, so you can also have a fun time! And some of them even have SG1 in them. :)

Title: The Protection Racket by Pares (aka [livejournal.com profile] kormantic). (Story also at personal fiction website)
Characters, Rating, Fandom: McKay/Sheppard, NC-17, SGA/SG1
Author Summary: He found the ad in miscellaneous: Any Job. Sliding scale.
Words: About 14,000 words.
My Summary/Review: So there's the line: O'Neill liked Carter at least as much as he liked pie—probably more! This is an awesome line, and one of the few I can pull up that doesn't completely spoil the plot. So the premise is that Rodney & Sam Carter are playing strip poker when Jack O'Neill comes in. Rodney bolts, thinking that O'Neill is going to to kill him. So Rodney goes looking for a body guard. Who of course ends up being John Sheppard. There's lots of really witty stuff and it is quite fun. (Yes, I definitely suck at this summary and review thing)
And here's more summary that tells plot points (highlight to read): [skip] Turns out John is retired Air Force-- the retired part being why he does lots of handyman jobs. But he knows O'Neill and thus knows that O'Neill isn't going to be murdering Rodney. So he figures that he'll let Rodney have his spazz-out for a while. John and Rodney end up sexing at some point. SG1 tracks Rodney down because they've found an Ancient artifact of some sort. This bit is fun because (a) John is actually doing his body guarding gig (he rushes out when he hears the door open, even though he'd been in the shower) and thus (b) "Major Sheppard?" O'Neill said eventually. "That you?" "Yes, sir." "I didn't place you right away." "Well, usually I'm wearing pants, sir." John accidentally touches the random Ancient artifact and thus, *bing* re-instated and heading to Atlantis.

Title: Research by [livejournal.com profile] jadesfire2808
Character, Rating, Fandom: Ronon, G, SGA
Length: Drabble
Warnings/Spoilers: None
My summary: Ronon's reaction to Earther inside jokes.
My review: Go clicky! It's short and worth your time! Usually when I'm reading, I'm looking to immerse myself in another world. Longer pieces are better for this, so I often skip drabbles. I skipped over this one several times, but I'm glad I finally clicked on it. It is a quiet and very insightful look at Ronon. Spoilers follow: [skip] When I read this line "...with the same single-mindedness that he uses to hunt Wraith". I was almost jerked out of the story. I thought to myself, 'Now, surely, that's an exaggeration! That doesn't make any sense. Why would that be true?' But she answered it beautifully and believably in the final sentence: "He had too many years without laughter before he came to Atlantis, and now, Ronon doesn't want to miss any of it". Very well-done.

Title: That Which Does Not Kill Us by [livejournal.com profile] liketheriverrun
Rating, Fandom, Charaters: T, SGA, Team plus a smidge of Woolsey
Category: Slash, humor, graphic novel
Word Count: 9 pages, so dialup users beware.
Spoilers: Anything up through The Seed
Author's Summary: The inspiring tale of a team strengthening their bond through group therapy (aka, five secrets about the team that came out in therapy)
My summary/review: Awesome, awesome, awesome! Absolutely worth the wait for the images to load :)

Hmmm, that ended up being way more SGA than I was intending. I guess that's what I get for putting both Stargate universes in the same folder....

As per usual, if I've got inaccuracies, broken links, or missing info (especially podfics, DVD commentaries, and sequels/prequels), please do let me know.

For my policy on things such as spoilers, warning, and ratings, please [see my policy post].

The motivation for this rec set is thusly: A few weeks ago [livejournal.com profile] winkingstar mentioned how it was sad that Madame Pince, Hogwarts Librarian, only ever showed up in the books when she was flying into a rage and shushing students. I pointed out [Every Librarian Has Her Day] (because fanfic always comes to the rescue). [livejournal.com profile] winkingstar then asked me if I had any recs of comforting/canon-repairing, non-trio-focused, non-explicit Harry Potter fics. Sadly, many of my Harry Potter bookmarks have been lots to the electrons of time (rather like the Dodo) so this list is the best stab I can make at the moment.

Story: The Last Mudblood 2.0
Author: [livejournal.com profile] furiosity
Fandom, etc: Gen, PG-13 to R, 10K words
Author's Summary: The war is over, and Voldemort has won. Harry Potter is dead. Neville Longbottom is a Death Eater, and together with Draco Malfoy they lead a manhunt for Hermione Granger. It's really that simple. Or is it?
Contains: Character death. Violence. Language. Allusion to rape. Dark themes.
My Notes: Even though this story is on the darker side I like it quite a bit. (Spoilerwarning--Neville isn't actually evil.) Neville is a really lovely secret agent in this. It is sad looking at how far the resistance has fallen, but Neville himself and the ending give me hope that things might be on the upswing in this universe. (N.B.: The '2.0' in the title is because this is a rewrite of one of her earliest stories to bring it in line with HBP canon.)
Why it fits: Neville is being awesome in a difficult situation.

Story: The Little Ones
Author: [livejournal.com profile] furiosity
Fandom, etc: PG, gen, 2K words
Characters: Ginny, Molly, Luna, Neville
Author's Summary: Not all is well at Platform Nine and Three Quarters.
My Notes: Another one I love for the realistic aspect. This is a scene I doubt JKR would have written and her stories are poorer for it.
Why it fits: Minor characters behaving courageously.

Story: Goyle's War
Author: [livejournal.com profile] meddow
Fandom, etc: PG, gen, 7200 words
Author's Summary: Voldemort has fallen and Hogwarts along with him and now a new wizarding world exists, one that does not seem to have a place for Gregory Goyle.
My Notes: I'm generally not a big fan of Crabbe or Goyle, but this fic made Goyle sympathetic. I loved watching Goyle figure out how he fits into this new world.
Why it fits: Minor character plus 'what happens after'.

Story: The LoP 'verse
Author: AJ Hall
Fandom, etc: Draco/Neville, R, two novels and several short stories/novellas.
Contains: Contains references to topics which some might find triggering.
My Notes: I like this series kind of an amazing amount. I love the author's characterisations of Neville and Draco and her portrayals of Narcissa and Neville's Grandmother are awesome (her Ginny, who shows up only briefly, is one of my favourite Ginnies ever). There are realistic and wonderful OCs, tricky plot-lines, and a crossover with Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan universe ('Time Shall Not Mend').
Why it fits: Lovely Neville characterisation. These stories were written before book seven, and as such, they show a different war against Voldemort. 'Ships That Pass' and 'Time Shall Not Mend' both take place during the war, and in my opinion, offer a more interesting (for the reader) war (written pre-Horcrux).

Story: Upon Reflection
Author: Nope
Fandom, etc: gen, PG (for potty-mouths), 1000 words.
Author's Summary: None given
My Summary: Sirius gets stuck in Draco's mirror after he goes through the veil.
My Notes: A funny, short piece.
Why it fits: Sirius's death made many fen angry. Not that I'm certain being stuck in Draco's mirror is a much better fate :)

Title: Switch
Author: [livejournal.com profile] corvidae9
Fandom, etc.: gen, G, 1900 words.
Author's Summary: The Sorting Hat has sorted thousands of students in the course of its life. If it makes a mistake or two, who's to say it's wrong? Certainly not Fred or George Weasley.
Author Notes: Written for the [livejournal.com profile] omniocular September challenge - The Harry Potter AU Extravaganza prompt 40 - A prank by Fred and George confuses the Sorting Hat in Harry's first year, resulting in horrible house mismatches.
My Thoughts: This is the first in a series of stories ('verse tag [here]) which retell (in short-story length, not novel-length) the HP books, but with the students in the Houses assigned to them by the drunken Sorting Hat (WIP, first two years are complete). There is a strong ensemble cast and many of the minor characters from canon have larger roles.
Why it fits: I like funny, light-hearted fics. Also, I know some fans don't like the idea of Sorting (either at such a young age or at all), so this turns that on its head.

As per usual, if I've got inaccuracies, broken links, or missing info (especially podfics, DVD commentaries, and sequels/prequels), please do let me know.

Here's a bit of meta on the topic of RPF and some fic recs.

RPF (real person fanfiction) kind of freaks me out. I know that the stories are fake, made up, pretend. That they're based off of the public persona and then filtered through the author's brain. I know all of this. It doesn't stop it from being really weird for me to read RPF-- the back of my brain is screaming the whole time: this is a real person. I suppose it's related to the part of my brain that had issues with me initially reading fanfic written in universes with actors (I've never had issues with fanfic where the canon is solely textual-- they're the canon author's mental playthings and now they're ours because we've read the books too. Regardless of if we write about them, we were going to be thinking about them anyways, so may as well put the words on the page. *derails this discussion* nb: this is not discussing the *legal* complexities of fanwork)-- because actors actually exist! And one of the things that can squick me out when reading fanfic based on live-action canon is too-true physical description (especially in a sexual context... When CharacterA is lusting after CharacterB's wrists or elbows or whatnot, there's the voice in the back of my brain going 'ummm, real person!')-- it simply feels like an invasion of privacy to me. So generally I've steered clear of RPF. But as I'm sure you know, even if you are avoiding reading something in fandom, you'll run across it eventually and then just sort of randomly read it.

But I have discovered that there's a few ways I can read RPF and not be squicked out by it:

  1. If I have no idea who the real people are, this bothers me less-- because then (as far as my mind knows) this is simply a fictional story with fictional people set in the present-day. (But then I do the canon-osmosis thing and then it sometimes starts being weird again.)
    1. The story has to stand entirely on it's own without knowing the 'canon'.
  2. If the rating is somewhere around PG-13-- keep the sex off-screen and keep the laudatory physical descriptors minimal-to-nil-- because then it feels less voyeuristic.
    1. If there is explicit-ness in the story, I'll likely skim over it or skip it entirely, so it cannot be crucial to plot.
  3. It's a cross-over into something clearly not of the real world-- Buffy/Angel, Farscape, Stargate, etc., etc., etc., because then it's clearer to my brain that the entire thing is fiction and thus I can treat the RP as fictional people. (Oh is there an RPF/Valdemar or Pern crossover anywhere? Because the reactions of the RP could be awesome!)
  4. If it uses a plot device that I love. Because I'm willing to venture into scary RPF-land for the sake of a damn good trope. (Some day I might well list the plot devices I love, but this entry is long enough already.)

Hmm, *ponders* evidently this translates roughly to 'I'm okay with RPF when I can pretend it's original fiction'.

To my surprise, I've come across RPF fics that I can read without hitting the back button. I haven't really been looking for them, so I don't know how exactly I've found these, but all's well that ends well! And if you know of other good RPF fics that you think might meet some of these criteria, then let me know :)

RPF fics I like despite being wigged out by RPF:

SGA RPF/SGA crossover, 1 fic/podfic )

Supernatural RPF, 1 fic )

6 American Idol RPF fics, including 1 podfic and 1 cross-over with Merlin )
