Week 3 theme: Delight in Dean
[Link to first day of recs] and to [the 'delighting in Dean' tag]
Rec Category: fic, preseries, family
Title: Glimpse
Author:
ygrawn
Rating: PG 13
Length/Word Count: 4600 words
Warnings/Spoilers: none, none
Summary: John figures Dean got the idea from that Dr. Seuss book about eggs and ham. When they tell Dean he’ll be getting a little brother or sister, Dean immediately says, “Oh, let’s call him Sam.”
Reccer's Comments: John watches Dean raise Sammy.
Reccer's Caveats: We catch the tail end of Dean giving Sammy the sex talk, but nothing non-gen is talked about.
Rec Category: fic, pre-series, cooking/food, family
Title: Red Beans and Rice
Author: Emily Burnson (
janissa11)
Podfic version: Red Beans and Rice (mp3), read by
twasadark, 25.3 MB, 28:23
Rating: PG
Length/Word Count: 4100
Warnings/Spoilers: none
Summary: Dean cooks. [Reader's summary.]
Reccer's Comments: Yet another fic involving family and food, is it any wonder I love it? This looks at the Winchester family through food, starts with them as children and goes right up to Sam leaving for Stanford, so the end is somewhat sad. I teared up a bit when I listened to the end of the podfic.
Sequel: Lasagna.
Rec Category: fic, AU
Title: Title: Do Winchesters Dream Of Electric Impalas?
Author:
kellifer_fic
Rating: PG (Language)
Length/Word Count: 10,906
Warnings/Spoilers: none
Summary: Dean was made to be a Big Brother.
Reccer's Comments: Dean is a human-looking robot AI who is responsible for taking care of Sam. The premise is interesting and the execution well-done. And there's a nice substitute for the one-year-to-live deal with the crossroads demon. There is a sequel in the works, yay!
Reccer's Caveats: In my opinion, Dean doesn't need to be a robot programmed to take care of Sam, purely human motivations are sufficient; however this is an interesting look at the 'what if'.
Rec Category: fic, angsty, post-Hell, character study
Title: You Stood Witness To Yourself
Author:
elizah_jane
Rating: Teen (for Dean being angsty Dean)
Length/Word Count: 1000 words exactly.
Warnings/Spoilers: "Lucifer Rising"
Summary: Die young and leave a pretty corpse.
Reccer's Comments: A great character piece on Dean after Hell. The attitude is amazingly spot-on and her Dean-voice here is wonderful. She had excellent timing in posting this-- it was posted a few days after the submissions for Dean-themed recs opened. (And I now owe her a unicorn!fic for putting headers on the story right before I went to rec it. Let this be a plea-- and possibly a bribe-- to authors to include headers because it makes it so much easier to rec!)
This coming week (week 4) the theme is ['It's Guy Love Between Two Guys!'] and I didn't submit anything for it. Which is mostly because I was sans internet for half of it and then being busy recovering from that, but also a little because their relationship is so very central to my understanding of the show that it's really hard for me to recollect fics on the basis of that. (And I forgot recs didn't have to align with the theme.) Anyway, ramblings over!
As per usual, please let me know if you've spotted anything that needs fixing or updating (especially the existence of transformative works such as podfics or commentaries)!
