I've got modly permission from [livejournal.com profile] spngenlove to post this, so yay.

There's a new comm [livejournal.com profile] spngenlove specifically for gen fanwork in Supernatural. This is yay for me because the main pairing in the fandom is sibling incest (Sam/Dean) and that kind of weirds me out. The comm does weekly rec sets which makes me happy, because I like recs and reccing. These are a little more 'off the top of my head' than my rec lists generally are and they're differently formatted than my standard because I'm c&p'ing what I submit to the comm. I might slightly elaborate on what I submit to the comm or I might not, depending on how talkative I feel when I make the post.

So here's my recs from [week 1]. Theme: no theme.

8 fics under the cut. )

Reposting my recs from this week's [livejournal.com profile] spngenlove. I only recced a few stories due to lack of time and they've all already been posted on the comm, so I'm duplicating them here now rather than on Sunday.

Week 2 theme: Celebrating Sammy
[Link to first day of recs]

3 fics: one SPN/SGA, two SPN

Title: Younger Son
Author/Artist: [livejournal.com profile] maychorian
Rating: PG/K+
Length/Word Count: 4828 words total (in two LJ posts)
Warnings/Spoilers: no warnings, spoilers for the pilot episode of both SPN and Stargate: Atlantis.
Summary: McKay told him not to go in that room, but John Sheppard is at least half cat, with the same curiosity problem. Meanwhile, there's something in Sammy Winchester's closet.
Reccer's Comments: I've always been interested in how/why Sam decided to leave the family business and this story posits a believable reason. Plus, I'm an absolute sucker for SPN/Stargate crossovers and this is a treat with good characterisations for both shows.
Sequel/related: The author also has some great Jack O'Neill & Dean fic at her [Jackndean! tag].

These next two combined say about 95% of what I really want to say about Sam at Stanford and you should absolutely read both of them if you pay any attention to SPN at all.

Title: Nowadays
Author/Artist: [livejournal.com profile] celtic_cookie
Rating: G
Length/Word Count: 1016
Warnings/Spoilers: none, none
Summary: Sam blends in.
Reccer's Comments: Sam trying to fit in, before/during Stanford and on the road again with Dean after Stanford. This feels very real to me. I loved that the Stanford section felt a bit off and the back-on-the-road-with-Dean section felt like slowly coming home. My favourite line (which guts me every time I read it) is: Excised 'y'all' forcibly from his vocabulary and replaced it with words like 'excised'.

Title: no one knew me, look right through me (the dreams in which i'm dying are the best i've ever had)
Author/Artist: [livejournal.com profile] unperfectwolf
Rating: PG
Length/Word Count: 1600 words
Warnings/Spoilers: none, none
Summary: There are some things the kids at Stanford knew about Sam Winchester, and some they didn't.
Reccer's Comments: A lovely character study of a Sam at Stanford who hasn't shed all of his habits from the first eighteen years of his life. As the author says, "because [S]am was gone for four years, and even he's not that good of actor." Pull quote: No one knew much about Sam Winchester. They knew little bits and pieces, like that he ran every morning and worked out every evening, though never in a gym. They knew he ate like it was his last meal all the time and that he had scars in the weirdest shapes with no tale to go along with nearly any of them.
Reccer's Caveats: Mentions made of Sam dating Jess.

As always, please point out corrections/additions (especially podfics or other transformative works) to what I've written here.

Short podfics are easy to overlook but often can be great. If you line up several of them, they're an excellent way to pass a short trip without worrying that you'll only be half-way through by the time you arrive. But I think listeners are sometimes wary of downloading the very short podfics, because the effort to length ratio is too large. So! Here's some great short podfics!

5 podfics, all under ten minutes, in SGA, Bones, Doctor Who, Discworld, Torchwood, Harry Potter, and Supernatural (yay for cross-overs!) )

Last post I recced really short podfic so it seems fitting to discuss really long podfic today. There's a sharp drop-off in number of submissions at the [audiofic archive] that are >2hours long, so I'm going to use that as my criterion for 'long'.

I like to listen to podfics mostly in one go, so it is much more difficult for me to find the time to listen to long podfics than really short ones. (Especially now that I've no longer got huge chunks of time full of mindless tasks on my hands. This is good for my brain not petrifying, but not so great from the point of view of having hours at a single go to listen to podfic.) So I've listened to less of the really long fics than I might like, especially recent ones. But I have managed to listen to some long fics, so here's some recs!

Three podfics, one SGA and two HP )

FYI: It looks like I'll be doing five days of podfic recs, so this is mid-meme! :)

The title of this post makes it seem much more, I don't know, authoritative and official than it actually is. I have spent a while thinking about recs and how I rec things and what I want to be doing with my recs-- I just haven't come to lots of final conclusions. But since you may care, I'll share what my current thoughts are. These may change, and if they do I'll update this. If you have feedback you'd like to give me, I'd be more than happy to hear it!

Most recent update: 26 July 2010
changes: Fixed a rogue 'small' tag. Added podficpool as a crossposting comm. Put the 'journal policies tag' statement at the top. Futzed with the wording of the Accessibility section. Did some stuff in the 'tags' section [clarified the difference between 'type:' and 'type[assoc]:' tags; hyperlinked tags given in the 'tag' section; very minor edits in the 'wip' tagging section; clarified LJ's 'searching by multiple tags' thing; made tags with action I need to take prefaced by 'fish' for easy searching]. (Oy, now I remember that this is why I haven't done a change log before-- because I always end up futzing with way more stuff than I initially intended to and then the log gets ridiculous-looking).

Previous updates:
a small, informal change-log, why I'm maintaining this, I don't even know.... )
