Star Trek Reboot Recs! (16 ST:R, 1 ST:R/SPN, 1 ST:TOS, 1 ST:TOS/SGA)
My policy on how I do my recs (including for things like warnings and spoilers) can be found at [my post about my recs], for those interested.
As promised, this set is Star Trek Reboot fic! (Um, and two TOS fics. I can't ever seem to follow my own rules, can I?) This isn't a masterlist of recs for this fandom because that would be even longer than this set is and this set is already half again as long as I had intended. Next up is Shawn/Gus (Psych)!
16 Star Trek Reboot fics and 1 ST:R/Supernatural fic
Story: Not All Those Who Wander
Author:
thedeadparrot (fic comm:
parrotfic)
Fandom, etc.: Star Trek Reboot, Gen (Spock Prime), PG, ~6,800 words
Author's Summary: Spock Prime has found ways to keep himself occupied; the universe doesn't know what hit it.
My Notes: Kirk writes letters to Spock Prime and Spock Prime wanders about the universe giving a helping hand here and there.
Story: Earth Kids Are Assholes
Author:
vampychick
Fandom, etc.: Star Trek Reboot, gen (Kirk & Spock), PG, 1 LJ post
Author's Summary: Spock and Kirk make friends while bleeding. So exactly what happened, except they're in grade school. AU.
My Notes: Spock is feeling out of place visiting his Earth relatives in Kansas over the summer and Kirk doesn't like bullies. It's awesome and filled with good times. Especially because the sequel (linked below) shows how this story could be backstory to the movie (did you think the Kirk & Spock scenes were full of emotion already? Then imagine them with the taste of a ... not broken, perhaps, but a lapsed... friendship.
Sequels: [When They Have to Take You In], missing scene-type thing from the end of the movie or maybe shortly there-after.
Story: Taking the slower path (we'll get there in the end)
Author:
black_eyedgirl
Fandom, etc.: Star Trek Reboot, gen, Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Bones, (some Spock/Uhura), PG-13, but for violence and angst rather than kissing 7,400 words
Author's Summary: They're not friends yet. That takes time, more than a few really disastrous missions, two anniversaries, and quite a lot of bloodshed. Jim's never been the patient type.
My Notes: Jim Kirk and his first year of captaincy of the Enterprise. There's some special Jim-Kirk-flavoured diplomacy, there's a telepathic planet, there's the developing Kirk and Spock relationship, there's Scotty trying to deconstruct the ship constantly to make it better and it ends with a ship-wide party. (Note that this isn't related to
seperis's fic of a similar name--[You'll Get There in the End (It Just Takes a While)])

Story: Graduate Vulcan for Fun and Profit
Author: Meg (
lazulisong//
lazulisong)
Fandom, etc.: Star Trek Reboot, gen, PG 13 because of Jim's potty mouth, 15600ish
Contains: Character death, abuse/torture (primarily after-effects/recovery), the Kelvin disaster and the Narada incident, reference made in passing to suicide (of offscreen, unnamed characters)
Author's Summary: It really does take a village to raise a Jim.
My Notes: This story fills me with an enormous amount of happiness *has hearts in her eyes*. McCoy does show up in this story and manages to not overly annoy me, so props for that. The OC who teaches Kirk Vulcan is awesome. This story spends several passages talking about language and having different words for different relationships (and reflects a bit upon what that tells you about the society that used them) (there might have been happy, high pitched noises when I read section 11. I am so weird sometimes, seriously.). I kind of want to print this story on cloth and make a blanket out of it so I can wrap myself up in it.
Story: So Wise We Grow
Author: Deastar
captanddeastar
Fandom, etc.: Star Trek Reboot, Kirk/Spock, R, 81K words
Contains: death of minor characters, discussion of past child sexual abuse
Author's Summary: “Commander Spock, we have located your son,” the Vulcan lady on the screen says, which would be great, except Jim can tell by the look on Spock’s face that he’s never heard of this kid before in his life. “If it is expedient, the child will be sent to join you on the Enterprise within the week.”
My Notes: This is a long fic but it gathers you in and you don't even notice the length. The length is awesome because it allows Deastar to have people gradually change and have that evolution shown on the page (rather than occurring in scene breaks). The kid is a great character. Spock and Kirk's feelings for each other, which go from platonic to romantic are great (seriously, such a good job on this). The occasional away mission and such remind you that this is, in fact, taking place on a working Federation vessel. My one complaint is that the scene where Uhura breaks off the relationship with Spock seemed a little off. I would have sent it back for another round or two of editing to get the nuances of Uhura's characterisation right. But that's a small scene in a large fic.
Story: A Beginner's Guide to Vulcan Sexual Practice, by Captain James T. Kirk
Author:
thingswithwings
Fandom, etc.: Star Trek Reboot, Kirk/Spock with background Gaila/Uhura, 4700 words, explicit (and hot like burning)
Contains: well, Kirk and Spock certainly adhere to the rules of the kinkfreezone comm. This story, however, does not. Lots of mention of various kinks, from bondage to D/s to bloodplay, but all sex is between consenting adults. Presuming that you consider Kirk to be an adult.
Pull Quote: "Jim, I will require – that is, if you would like to continue, it would be appropriate for you to do some background reading and research first. I'll forward some documents to your, your office." Spock looks relieved to have gotten all that out, and even more relieved when he glances behind himself in time to see that he's made it to the door. [no author summary given.]
My Notes: Spock, as a half-Vulcan who wishes to hold to the Vulcan standard practices regarding sexual conduct, has a very strict set of rules which he (and thus his partner) must follow. And who do you go to when you want to play with rules? Kirk! I also really love Uhura and Gaila and their relationship in this fic.
Story: cut and fucking paste and edit
Author:
crimsonclad
Fandom, etc.: Star Trek Reboot, spock/uhura, newtrek/oldtrek, kirk/bafflement, rated pg-13, each 1 LJ post long
Contains: spoilers for a few terribly obvious TOS references that you should already know about.
Author's Summary: So,
helpwess and I were having an extremely serious discussion about characterization in the new Star Trek. It went something like this: Kirk: YO SPOCK WASSUP. BITCHES, RITE?? / Spock: "Good day to you as well, captain." || gratitude to
quettaser, who looked this over, and with whom I shared a fantastic interchange re: all of Kirk's fingers being fingerguns, even when he is not making the "pew pew" noise
My Notes: Everyone and their pet owl have already recced this, with damn good reason. So if you haven't read this yet, (a) why not? and (b) do it now! *makes shooing motions* This is a great fic for the Kirk (he's the sort of crazy fun that I enjoy), the pacing, and for the fact that even though "ack the mindmeld gave me feeeeeeelings" he quietly arranges Spock and Uhura's duty schedules to line up rather than trying to pursue this Spock (who he has an entirely different history with than his counterparts'). And he wanders around with one of those finger puzzles while having legitimate conversations with his officers. Also, I entirely agree with the above comment about Kirk's fingers are all finger guns all the time.
Story: Captain Awesome and His Amazing Enterprise
Author:
ninhursag (writing journal:
vaingirlfic)
Fandom, etc.: Star Trek Reboot, Spock/Uhura, PG-13, 1 LJ post
Contains: Um. With some angst, because I can't help myself, I am truly sorry. But, nothing compared to the other stuff I write. ( Abuse. Character death. )
Author's Summary: What is this? CRACK. Because every fandom in the world needs an au where they're all in high school and in a band, OKAY. And this is that au. Ahaha.
My Notes: The characterisations translate well and I love how the characters interact with each other. Awesome. High school AUs I can generally take or leave and I'm generally not hot on band-AUs, but I really like this story a lot.
Story: Four Consequences of the Unexpected and Unlikely Friendship Between James T. Kirk and Nyota Uhura
Author: Tris B.
trisfic
Fandom, etc.: Star Trek Reboot, Jim & Nyota; Spock/Uhura; Kirk/McCoy implied, PG-13, ~2700 words
Author's Summary: Boys. Girls. Clothes. Pon Farr.
My Notes: Fun Kirk & Nyota friendship fic.
Story: Shooting the Moon
Author: [Domenika Marzione] (
miss_porcupine)
Fandom, etc.: Star Trek Reboot, gen, teen, 5100 words
Contains: character death (due to the Narada incident)
Author's Summary: It's hard to know what you're looking for when you don't realize it's missing
My Notes: Those of you who read SGA know that Domenika Marzione is great at bringing military realism to her fanfiction (even when the canon is questionable). She does it here with this story that takes place Kirk's first year at the academy. Despite being a Fourthie year, Kirk (due to a series of administrative snafus-- which themselves are spot-on for a military bureaucracy) ends up the roommate of a First year cadet. There's realistic low-level hazing (I'm not sure it's even enough to call it hazing. Is there a word for ritualistic establishing of comparative ranks in manner which isn't likely to end up with police reports?). There's, I dunno, an edge to this story that feels right to me.
Story: the Village!verse
Author:
chaletian
Fandom, etc.: Star Trek Reboot, rated teen pairings are various (in general, the stories aren't romantic, so you could consider it gen).
Length: each story is complete (and usually a short LJ post in length), but the verse has quite a number of stories in it (~20).
Contains: see individual story headers.
Reader's Summary: The Enterprise as an ensemble story with good characterisations and snapshots of life for those aboard her.
My Notes: At time funny, at times serious, this is a great verse. One of my favourite ones is [The Starfleet Annual Budgetary Memo: An Enterprise Tradition] which is spot-on.
Alternate links: [first story (It Takes A Village)]
Story: Whore (Standard's Not My Native Tongue Megamix)
Author:
zvi
Fandom, etc.: Star Trek Reboot, gen, PG-13, 1 LJ post in length
Author's Summary: Gaila does not have enough time to deal with this nonsense…She knows that Jensen is trying to insult her, but Gaila was raised to be a Knife of the Syndicate.
My Notes: A morning in the life of Gaila at Starfleet Academy. I like that this story shows that Gaila's alien biology and different culture have effects on her life at Starfleet Academy. One thing I dislike about this story is that I find the physical descriptions of things in this fic often-times confusing for some reason (I just can't arrange the people/objects in some of the scenes to make sense with what's written on the page.). This is probably an idiosyncratic reader problem and anyway the story is quite good.
Original story: This story is a remix of
igrockspock's [ story 'Whore'].
Story: we are air
Author:
_seven_crows
Fandom, etc.: Star Trek Reboot, gen, PG for violence, 1 LJ post in length
Contains: refers to the opening part of the movie.
Author's Summary: Five anniversaries and birthdays of the Enterprise crew.
My Notes: This is a good fic, but I wasn't going to rec this one because this list was already too long. Then I reread it and, oh goodness, there's an exchange in here that absolutely cracks me up and I couldn't not rec it. (I'm not telling you which bit it was because (a) I don't want to spoil the effect of coming across it whilst reading and (b) I'm kind of worried that this is one of those times when my sense of humour might not translate well. But if you want to know what it is, but I will be telling the author about it when I leave the 'you've been recced' notification so you can check that if you really want to know).
Story: Twenty-Four Hours in the Life of a Cupcake
Author:
mahaliem
Fandom, etc.: Star Trek Reboot, PG, 985 words, can be read as gen, preslash, or slash.
Main characters: Kirk, Spock, and Cupcake (the Security Officer-- one of the guys Kirk got in a fight with at the bar at the beginning)
Author's Summary: Life can be difficult for a cupcake.
My Notes: This story is amusing, which is great, but it's actually really interesting on a meta level as well. Notice how Mahaliem said that the nature of the pairings was up to the reader's interpretation? This fic is the single best example of 'bring your goggles' that I have ever encountered. You can read it as entirely gen and that's supported in the text. You can also read it as anything from established relationship to one-sided-pining to mutual-interest-but-not-yet-anything-more between almost any combo of the listed characters and that's supported in the text too! Reading this for the first time I could feel my fanfic goggles (or slash goggles, if you prefer) sliding into place and trying to tell me 'oh, look, that's jealousy! Therefore they're totally a pair! Oh wait, look at that gesture! They're clearly together! Oh look....!' and so on. Part of it is, I think, the training in subtext and subverting text that I have received whilst in fandom-- things like jealousy (or apparent jealousy) and antagonism now mean different things than when I was happily bopping about with no knowledge of fandom. I think the way Mahaliem pulled this off was by describing things (facial expressions, actions, dialogue) but not ever giving us any emotional context/content (there's no 'my friend' or 'I'm so jealous' or 'I love him but when he does stupid shit like this I wonder why'). Which then allows you to project your own interpretation onto the story.
Story: Linguistics 101; or, Thirteen Ways To Say I Love You
Author: Raven
loneraven
Fandom, etc.: Star Trek Reboot, PG, Spock/Uhura, 1 LJ post long
Contains: canon character death
Author's Summary: Vulcan and human cultural differences.
Pull Quote:"...Give them a really good, really sparkling lecture, make them think linguistics and communication are vital and elegant and exciting areas of study, and they'll stick through their 101 class for the hope of something better." // "The problem, perhaps ironically," Spock noted, "is how we communicate these truths." // Nyota grinned. "Show them cross-cultural commonality, show them how we're all different and the same, show them how linguistic groups express themselves, in short: tell them how to proposition the galaxy. Ways To Say I Love You, 101."
My Notes: I love the conceit of this story-- how it tells the story of the Enterprise and those aboard her and how the care for one another and then there's these little asides about various cultures/customs as scene breaks. It's very well done.
Story: The First Time
Author:
bravecows
Fandom, etc.: Star Trek Reboot, gen to OFC/OFC, G, 2100 words
First line: They'd been working in fearsome silence for twenty minutes when Feera finally worked up the courage to speak, but just as she said, "Did you hear about this James T. Kirk?" in the most casual tone she could summon up, Sharanjeet dropped her hyperspanner. [no author summary given.]
My Notes: A beautiful bit of meta on the Star Trek verse told in a lovely fic package.
Story: War Stories
Author:
july_july_july
Fandom, etc.: Star Trek Reboot/Supernatural, gen (Kirk, Dean), PG-13, 1 LJ post long
Contains: Spoilers for the Star Trek Reboot movie only (Future!fic to SPN)
Author's Summary: Two men walk into a bar and tell war stories.
My Notes: Set at the end of the movie (the night before the award ceremony), Kirk heads off to a bar. He and Dean play 'my life is crazier than your life' for a bit, but the real point is watching Dean help Kirk deal with the events of the movie and grow up a bit as an officer.
1 Star Trek: TOS fic rec, 1 ST:TOS/SGA fic rec
Story: The REAL Trouble with Tribbles (or, how the tribbles conquered the Klingon Empire)
Author: Renata Lord
snowlight
Fandom, etc.: Star Trek TOS, Tribble!Kirk/Tribble!Spock, PG, 1,450 words
Author's Summary: Written for the premise: What if there is a Tribble!Kirk and Tribble!Spock amongst the vast tribbles army in the TOS episode "The Trouble with Tribbles"?
First line: Spock refuses to coo. He deigns it too undignified.
My Notes: Amusing crack.
Story: Where Did All The Physics Go?
Author:
amireal (writing journal:
amific)
Fandom, etc.: SGA/Star Trek TOS, McKay/Sheppard, adult, 23K words
Author's Summary: "But that's just not possible!"
My Notes: McKay and Sheppard end up in TOS, it's great.

![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
Story: The First Time
Author:
![[info - personal]](https://s.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Fandom, etc.: Star Trek Reboot, gen to OFC/OFC, G, 2100 words
First line: They'd been working in fearsome silence for twenty minutes when Feera finally worked up the courage to speak, but just as she said, "Did you hear about this James T. Kirk?" in the most casual tone she could summon up, Sharanjeet dropped her hyperspanner. [no author summary given.]
My Notes: A beautiful bit of meta on the Star Trek verse told in a lovely fic package.
Story: War Stories
Author:
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)

Story: The REAL Trouble with Tribbles (or, how the tribbles conquered the Klingon Empire)
Author: Renata Lord
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
Author:
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
Fandom, etc.: SGA/Star Trek TOS, McKay/Sheppard, adult, 23K words
Author's Summary: "But that's just not possible!"
My Notes: McKay and Sheppard end up in TOS, it's great.

Which reminds me, I think you will like 'Graduate Vulcan for Fun and Profit', and it only has two parts, so that won't clutter up your tabs.
And the one by Deastar has a PDF available for download. But it's loooong (I'm not sure if that's a plus or a minus for you right now).
