Day 5: Miscellaneous Podfics!

For my policy on things such as spoilers, warning, and ratings, please [see my policy post].

These podfics didn't fit in elsewhere in this meme but I like them! So today's theme is no theme! Whee!

Podfic: [In the House of Dust, (mp3)]
Read by: [info - personal] luzula//[livejournal.com profile] luzula
Written by: [livejournal.com profile] kindkit
Etc.: The epic of Gilgamesh, Enkidu/Gilgamesh, rated teen, 14:21, 1800 words
Contains: Mentions in passing characters that have died.
Author Summary: not given
My Notes (podfic): The reading is thick and heavy and atmospheric-- perfect for the story. There's something intense about the pronunciation of 'dust' and 'die' that's emphatic and just works so well.
My Notes (story): Lovely and reflective. All the background you need to know about the epic of Gilgamesh is included in the author notes, which are also read at the beginning of the podfic.

Podfic: [Of His Bones Are Coral Made, (mp3)]
Read and Written by: FayJay ([livejournal.com profile] pandarus)
Etc.: Pirates of the Caribbean (movies)/Sandman crossover, gen, teen, 24:12, one LJ post long
Contains: brief torture with branding iron
Author Summary: in which Cutler Beckett discovers that there are worse things than death.
My Notes (podfic): I listened to this first a year or so ago and then lost the file in one of those great (dis)organisation events that always seems like a better idea at the time than it ends up being. When I found it again I thought to myself, 'Oh right, that's the weird and gripping PotC one' and I was right. I like FayJay's reading of this, she has good pacing and emotion and an excellent grip on Beckett. Her Captain Jack Sparrow voice isn't quite spot-on but is good nonetheless. I haven't ever read the fic, but I can see the story clearly from just listening to the podfic (there's lots of great descriptions).
My Notes (story): While I enjoyed the PotC movies, I really haven't entered the fandom at all. So I'm not quite sure why/how I acquired this podfic (or the next one), but it is interesting and weird. Possibly could be considered a character study of Beckett.

Podfic: [To Sail Beyond The Sunset, (mp3)]
Read and written by: FayJay ([livejournal.com profile] pandarus)
Etc.: Pirates of the Caribbean/Sandman, gen, PG, 11:42, one LJ post long
Contains: Technically, character death since it opens with him dying, but there is a story...
Author Summary: in which James Norrington meets a remarkable young lady.
My Notes (podfic): Lovely reading, contemplative, occasionally confused/uncertain, just as Norrington find himself. FayJay does well with the differences between Death (who's presented as a fairly modern young woman in the comics) and Norrington (a British officer from several centuries ago).
My Notes (story): I enjoy Death (from Sandman) and Norrington talking to each other.
Sequels: This and the previous story are part of a series of PotC/Sandman crossovers collectively called 'Endless Days', the rest can be found [at her masterlist.]

Okay, the formatting on these next two gets kind of complicated. They're two podfics, but they're the first two stories in a series. So I listen to them back-to-back and thus only really have one set of comments. But the headers looked really weird when I combined them, so I'm breaking down the headers by story, but only putting my podfic comments in once. *waves hands* Sorry!

Podfic: [The Underwire Job, (mp3)] (audiobook includes 'The Cat-Burglar Job', discussed next)
Read by: phela ([info - personal] aphelant//[livejournal.com profile] aphelant)
Written by: Betty ([livejournal.com profile] brown_betty) and [livejournal.com profile] emeraldwoman
Etc.: Leverage, Parker/Alec Hardison, rating: (There is drinking and Warcraft in this one, folks, as well as mature discussion of sexuality as depicted on the internet. It's probably depraved), 28:04, 4700 words
Author Summary: Parker recruits Eliot for a side job. Comedy and horror ensue.
My Notes (podfic): She doesn't do voices for the different characters, but everyone's dialogue is still clear. The way she reads Eliot and Parker in particular is very well-done (which I've realised more and more as I've seen more of the actual show, to the point that every now and then the show reminds me of this reading. And then I realise that I'm doing it backwards.) Good pacing, good emotion-whilst-in-Eliot's-head (since it's a tight 3rd POV on him).
My Notes (story): There's lots of great banter and interactions here. Also, how can you resist a story where the plot is Parker asking Eliot to help her get Hardison to want to date her. And there's the fun of Eliot explaining 'normal people' interactions to Parker and, just, yay. These stories are the ones that finally made Leverage steal my heart. Oh, Crazy Parker! Oh, OT3 (Parker/Eliot/Hardison)! How much do I love you? (Answer: lots!)

Podfic: [The Cat Burglar Job, (mp3)], [audiobook (m4b) (includes 'The Underwire Job')]
Read by: phela ([info - personal] aphelant//[livejournal.com profile] aphelant)
Written by: Betty ([livejournal.com profile] brown_betty) and [livejournal.com profile] emeraldwoman
Etc.: Leverage, Eliot Spencer/Parker/Alec Hardison, rated (schemin', macin', and kissin', y'all), 1:10:04, 12K words
Contains: passing references to past sexual abuse.
Author Summary: brown_betty: But if we wrote kittenfic, no one would respect us in the morning! / emeraldwoman: Betty. No one respects us now.
My Notes (podfic): See above entry.
My Notes (story): Parker's kittens get stolen and they have to get them back. And also, we finally get Parker/Eliot/Hardison to get together. Yay!
Sequels: Sequels can be found at the [odd jobs series tag] at Betty's journal.
Alternate story links: [Series link at AOOO], although not all stories are up there currently.

Podfic: [Patrick's Desperate Plan To Stop His House Expanding And Its Unexpected But Ultimately Pleasant Result, (mp3)] and [audiobook (m4b)]
Read by: [info - personal] general_jinjur//[livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur
Written by: [info - personal] toft//[livejournal.com profile] toft_froggy
Etc.: A Dog's Breakfast/SGA cross-over, Patrick/John Sheppard (NB: David Hewlett played both Patrick and Rodney McKay), PG13, 23:13, 4K words
Author Summary: Tag to 'A Dog's Breakfast', crossover with SGA, soopah-sekrit pairing. You'll never guess. Crack.
My Notes (podfic): I have no idea who Patrick is (or anything about the movie), so jinjurly's voice is now how I think he is. She reads this a lovely calm, methodical voice which is great because Patrick is logical and calm according to himself (and it's tight 3rd POV on him), but perhaps quite odd by anyone else's standard. I think the understated emotion is a great choice here. (Of course, someone else might not think it's understated. But in my head things are always quite dramatic and so whenever I see inside anyone else's head and there's not dramatic swooning when the milk's run out I claim it's understated.)
My Notes (story): No knowledge of 'A Dog's Breakfast' required. A fun crossover, I'm surprised at how well it works, because it really does work. (Some might consider it a fusion but I don't really feel like caring). Sometimes I wonder why John always gets paired up with the socially inept types and then I remember, oh yeah, it's because he's John Sheppard.

Podfic: [Post-Nuptial, (mp3)] and [audiobook (m4b)]
Read and written by: [info - personal] rageprufrock//[livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock
Etc.: SGA, Rodney McKay/John Sheppard, explicit sex, 1:02:46
Contains: mpreg, also short description of post a culling.
Author Summary: not given.
My Notes (podfic): This reading always makes me grin absurdly. Rageprufrock does the bickering and bantering quite well. Rodney at ~42:00 hopped up from the epi-pen is awesome.
My Notes (story): John and Rodney pretend to be in a relationship, pretend to be pregnant, acquire children, and then acquire a relationship. This is an excellently done fic of this type. Also, there are appearances by non-John&Rodney characters which makes the fic seem Atlantis-based. Keller is great in this. She's competent and understanding and enthusiastic about medicine (and angry when the boys' hijinx interfere with her investigating strange medical phenomenon.)

And this concludes my five days of podfic recs meme! I hope you enjoyed the ride :) And hey, why not also rec some podfics yourself? *hint, hint* And if when you do rec, please drop me a link so I can listen to them!

As always, if you've found any errors or additional info, let me know. This is normally where I would ask for podfic versions, but *dances* these are already podfics!
