Day 2: Titchy little podfics!

For my policy on things such as spoilers, warning, and ratings, please [see my policy post].

Short podfics are easy to overlook but often can be great. If you line up several of them, they're an excellent way to pass a short trip without worrying that you'll only be half-way through by the time you arrive. But I think listeners are sometimes wary of downloading the very short podfics, because the effort to length ratio is too large. So! Here's some great short podfics!

Podfic: [Light On (mp3)] and [audiobook (m4b)]
Read by: [livejournal.com profile] winkingstar
Written by: [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan
Etc: SGA AU, Rodney McKay/John Sheppard, G, 4:46
Contains: Wing!fic (the John-is-a-moth story)
Author Summary: "Leave a light on," John says, "so I can find you again," and Rodney does.
My notes (podfic): The way winkingstar says 'leave a light on' is different each time as the emotion and meaning behind it changes each time. I find this really wonderful. Her reading very much complements the fairy tale nature of the story. This story is short, but each time I listen to it I want to just close my eyes and listen to it with all my mind (I very nearly put this in the 'podficcing for fun and profit AKA podfics which take full advantage of the podfic format' post). She does a great job of showing John and Rodney's individual lonelinesses and also how they fit together.
My notes (story): I love the fairy tale nature of this story. I love that there is no explanation for how/why John is a moth and Rodney isn't (I admit to occasionally spending time wondering about the world that this is set in. And how neat is it that such a short little ficlet gives rise to such thinking?). Also, the cover for the podfic (which I only just noticed when compiling this rec set) by [info - personal] cybel is great.

Podfic: [Nerd Alert (that time when Bones wanted to know how the TARDIS worked), (mp3)]
Read by: [livejournal.com profile] iamsab
Written by: [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix
Etc: Bones/Doctor Who crossover, gen, rated G, 2:15
Author Summary: That time when Bones wanted to know how the TARDIS worked
My notes (podfic): I like the juxtaposition of Bones's thinking/methodical voice and Ten's 'Silly human! Stop messing with things!' voice.
My notes (story): Haven't you always wanted to see Dr. Brennan meet the Doctor? I hadn't, but then I saw this story and suddenly I had :)

Podfic: [Sand (mp3)]
Read and Written by: [livejournal.com profile] jadesfire2808//[info - personal] jadesfire
Etc: Discworld/Torchwood, gen, rated G, 4:39
Contains: I'd say spoilers for "They keep killing Suzie", except it's in the title.
Author Summary: There was nothing but black sand as far as the eye could see.
My Notes (podfic): Most of the podfics I'm reccing for this meme are read by someone other than the author, whereas this one is read by the author. (I like both sorts.) I like listening to fics read by the author because that makes another way for the author to tell the story. Jadesfire reads this much more calmly than I would read it, which makes the story into a more somber piece. (In my head, when I read it, it is fully of Suzie yelling and DEATH emoting.) One of the reasons I like to listen to this is because it is so far different from the story I hear in my head. Jadesfire's version makes for a creepier Suzie, I think.
My Notes (story): Beautiful character study of Suzie trying to cheat death yet one more time.
Sequel: This is an interlude in ['A Few Quiet Drinks' Series]. There are a total of five fics in it, each less than ten minutes long.

Podfic: [Meanwhile, Back At The Ranch (mp3)]
Read by: [livejournal.com profile] aillychan
Written by: Troll Princess ([livejournal.com profile] apocalypsos)
Etc: SPN, gen, PG-13, 8:30
Contains: Bad language (no character death, really), spoilers through "Devil's Trap".
Author Summary: For the record, everybody dies in the end.
My notes (podfic): I wasn't sure that this story would actually work well as a podfic, but the reader has a lovely sense of amused superiority, which is perfect for the story. And she does different voices for the different Winchesters, which is great. The very beginning has a description of the Winchester's dead bodies that's actually kind of disturbing. It didn't bother me when I read it myself, but with the evil glee of the reader it was odd. So good job on that, I guess. :) (BTW, I am really squeamish, so if I can listen to this, you likely can too.)
My notes (story): The story is told linearly, but as it goes on, information is revealed to the reader going back in time. I thought that this device was used really well in this fic, as was the sectioning of the fic (it is broken down into scenes, each of which are numbered). And the narrator -- and who the narrator is -- is awesome. Plus, it has very spot-on characterisations for the boys and John.

Podfic: [The Cleverness of Me (mp3)]
Read and Written by: Audra Lachesis ([livejournal.com profile] spazzula)
Etc: Harry Potter, Harry Potter/Ginny Weasley, rated G, 8:43
Contains: fluff, Harry/Ginny pairing, written pre-HBP, so it's now AU
Author Summary: People have such odd courtship rituals. They fuss and fret about every little thing, until they drive themselves to distraction with worry. Their lives would be so much easier if they just exchanged dead mice like a normal species...
My notes (podfic): The reader has a really good kitty voice for when the cat is speaking dialogue (the 'love me' that the kitten demands to Ginny is just so very spot-on). I very nearly didn't include this one because it's so simple. But I've had the podfic for years and I've never deleted it and it always makes me smile and grin and the kitten-voice is lovely. So here, have a rec!
My notes (story): Harry buys Ginny a kitten for her birthday, story told from the POV of the kitten. This is sweet, slightly ridiculous, and it always makes me smile.

Weren't those all awesome? Don't you want more really short podfic? Ah-ha! Then here's some links just for you! At the end of each year's [livejournal.com profile] amplificathon//[info - community] amplificathon fest, there's an audiobook compilation made of short podfics from the fest. It's usually several hours long, so it's a great way to listen to a number of short podfics without too much effort. Here is [this year's (2009)] and [last year's (2008)].
