My policy on how I do my recs (including for things like warnings and spoilers) can be found at [my policy post about my recs], for those interested.

I won the services of two podficcers, lunchy_munchy and via_ostiense, during the first round of the help_japan auction. And once the podfics started arriving in my inbox, I though, 'Oh, hey, wouldn't it be cool if I wrote up recs for these as they came in and as I listened to them?' The answer to that is, 'Obviously, yes!' But that raises the question: 'Did I do that?', to which the answer is obviously 'hahhahahaa, you must be new here if you think there was a snowball's chance of me following through on that.' But I'm going to count it as a partial victory, because there are still stories to be podficced, so I'm at least a little bit on top of things. Ish. Sorta? Eh, close enough!

As I starting thinking on this rec set, I noticed that there were other fanworks which just kept creeping in round the edges. And in fine Fishly fashion, I decided to roll with that. So what we have here is each podfic recorded for me paired with another fanwork(s) in some manner which I swear makes sense to me! :D I've used horizontal rules to separate each set visually because I like imposing order.

It's hockey season on my TV, what with the Stanley Cup playoffs of the amusingly-named NHL, and so I thought a hockey-themed rec set would be appropriate. I wrote most of these recs whilst somewhat loopy from being ill. So, um, yeah, these aren't always so much with the coherency? But eh, who cares! Let's consider this entry more of a 'hockey stories which make me happy' list and call it time to move onto the recs, yeah? :)

I've had to split this rec set into two LJ posts due to size, but it's also kind of convenient from a thematic point of view. [The first part of this rec set] is in my regular format for recs, but I've done something a bit different with this part. (And I know the requester mostly cares about fic, but I really couldn't write these up any other way, sorry).

There were two constellations of fanworks which I wanted to include on this list which were troublesome to my normal format for the happy-making reason of having too many associated fan works to be able to apply my usual header template unaltered. What I have here are two fics (both fanfic of the Harry Potter series) which each spawned a number of works in a variety of media.

I really really love cases like this-- where we see fen springboarding off of another fan's work. I think the dynamic in these cases is subtly different than that between canon and fanwork-- possibly because of the complete loop which feedback goes producing different sorts of things or possibly it just has to do with the differences in perceived playing field between the two cases and then with that being something that shows up in the work which they create, or possibly it has more to do with how I perceive it, but regardless, it's awesome). Irregardless of the exact reason why, I do love it, and hopefully you do/will too.

The way I've formatted this is to divide this post up into three sections, the first being this blathery section and the second two being the fanwork constellations associated with each fic. In those two sections, I first rec the initiating fic and then the entire constellation. As always, but especially with these works, please do mention any related works which I've unintentionally overlooked!

Small policy change with regards to updating old posts

Hallo all! I'm sorry that this is not nearly as exciting as any of the rec sets which are in progress (and are totally going to be awesome, sez me, just as soon as they are finished, drat), but since I do seem to be doing things slowly, and since I've just realised that my private bookmarks are not visible to people not me... *facepalm*

I do try to keep my past rec posts updated with additional related works as they are produced and as I come aware of them (so, things like podfic versions, remixes, commentary, blah blah blaaaaaaah), but I don't always update the entry quickly, plus lately I've only been privately bookmarking things and not updating the posts. This, of course, is not at all useful to anyone who'd like to follow those nonexistent links :( And since I assume that a peruser of my recs would prefer to have a link now even if it isn't very snazzy rather than to wait until I have time to do all the coding to prettify things, here's a small policy change:

I've gone through my 'update recs list with this' bookmarks and dropped all the links into comments to the corresponding original recs post. I'll continue to do this whenever I run across a link if don't have the time/brainpower/whatever to actually insert the link properly into the post. As I have the brainpower/etc, I'll add the links from my comments to the posts (and unless someone has responded to my comment, I'll delete my comment, just for neatness's sake). Unlike with links in the post proper, it is quite possible that the works linked in my comments might not be in the tags.

Okay, perfectly clear like mud? Good! *goes back to poking a rec list with a stick*

Once upon a time, a long time ago, vibrantharmony bought my rec set services for help_haiti. I was given the following prompt:

I've got a few different rec list ideas burbling in the back of my brain so hopefully I'll be able to start working on one of those in earnest just as soon as I'm done with the fic I'm (frantically) writing up for the you_know_thats_right fest (due date: this weekend! eeep!).

My Notes (story): The story does what it says on the tin. I actually would really love follow-up story(ies), both for the case and the relationship, which IMO says that there must have been some plot along with the porn here :)

There was an earthquake and it wasn't pretty. And so, fen, doing what fen so often do, decided that a fanworks auction (help_haiti) was the thing to do. I can only do so much to help with my own pocket book, so I'm hoping to encourage someone else to donate as well.

I'm offering up a rec set to prompter's specifications! Anything you want, I will answer to the best of my ability! This is a great way to, for example, ask me for zombie fics *shudders*. Or really, anything else you think I wouldn't normally do. Or! You can ask for something that I might already do but this way you will ensure that I do that rec list next! I imagine the bidding for me is going to be less than fierce, so why not donate something small and watch me dance to your bidding. *Dance, puppet, dance!* :)

And you might be saying, but Fish, you are busy? To which I reply: Yes, yes I am. That's why I specifically state that it will take however long it takes.

At long last, here is my Shawn/Gus rec post! Sorry it took so long, on top of everything else, my bookmarks were even more nonexistent that normal, so it took some time to track things down. I'm also sure I missed some, being as how I am a forgetful Fish. But at the end of my nine fic recs there's a link to a nice meta which itself contains recs, so you have hope for even more fic. :)

I can't remember what's next on my to do list for reccing, I think it might be "Wincest I read despite being bothered by incest". Which, honestly, is a lot more fic than I had expected (I've already mentally broken it down into two sets) (what does this mean, boys and girls? It means I suck at abiding by my own boundaries when I hear the call of an interesting story. It also means I'm learning to use the back button.). But that one may or may not get interrupted by a Yuletide rec set. So I guess stay tuned for your standard upcoming random rec set?

You may have noticed that this isn't Psych fic. That's because I'm, well, flaky and also still recovering from the pre-holiday-time rush. I'm still hoping to have it finished before I start my next Psych fic (that'd be by mid-Jan), but we'll see. But in celebration of the fact that my brain is currently half-functional I decided to give you a rec list composed of things that I don't normally rec. Whee? This is perhaps a bit more scattered than one of my normal sets, but then again, my recs are normally fairly scattered, so maybe it's just average :)

Are you in the middle of December stress? Do you need fanworks which remind you that the world is indeed an awesome place? Did you think that the next rec set I posted was going to be Shawn/Gus from Psych? Are you surprised that evidently I had remembered a bunch of Psych stories as S/G when in fact they were gen? Are you going to be at all suprised that this isn't a Psych rec set?

A rash of new shows have shown up on my flist and Yuletide has begun. So how about some recs for small fandoms? And some for fandoms which aren't small but that I don't read much in. I had intended to put links to canon for the rarer ones, and to sort the recs somewhat (like keeping the fairy tale fandoms together), but this is kind of an insanely long set as is, so I decided to go see what desert was in the kitchen instead. ETA: If you saw the version before I ran spell-check, can you just pretend that you didn't see it?

Theme: Free For All

This month the theme at the comm is H/C with focus on various characters. Which isn't quite my cuppa. So I think I'm going to be focusing on reccing other fandoms this month. Current in-progress rec list: rare fandoms! After that, either Star Trek Reboot (which everyone and their uncle has already recced), or Psych (with an emphasis on Shawn/Gus), or Sentient!Atlantis (because I've missed SGA fic!), Wincest-I-can-read (okay, it's SPN but it's not gen), or Harry Potter, or something else that strikes my fancy. Feel free to tell me which you'd prefer :)

SPN recs for pixiequeen

I offered recs to pixiequeen10thk because she's just come into SPN fandom and I've been here a while. She asked for long, plotty stories (with the occasional sex scene), happy endings are awesome (but crying on the way is permissible), prefers Dean/Castiel and is squicked by incest.

This rec list actually gave me a bit of trouble as I had less overlap between her preferences and fics I read/liked than I had expected. Part of that is I think of angels as sexless beings and thus haven't read very much Dean/Castiel (and what I do like within that pairing isn't likely to be a favourite of a D/C shipper) but another part is certainly that I seem to collect a high percentage of crack/humour in this fandom compared to fandom standard. Anyway, I hope you enjoy at least some of what I have here!

Gaila-centric fics (Star Trek Reboot)

When I first poked around fandom after watching the Star Trek Reboot movie, I was surprised to see fic about Gaila because she's onscreen so very little. But after reading a bit, I've found I quite like who Gaila is in fandom. So here's my Gaila character manifesto in fic rec list format.

Story: You're Gonna Make It After All
Author: igrockspock
Fandom, etc.: Star Trek Reboot, Gaila, Uhura, Kirk, Spock, R, 1 LJ post long
Author's Summary: Two indecent exposure citations, one best friend, one amazing sex partner, one unexpected mentor, and a Starfleet-funded study of intercultural sexual norms. Sounds like a normal academic year for Gaila.
My Notes: If the author's summary doesn't make you curious, I'm not sure what else I can say. This story is beautifully done. The author has great control over the different character voices and shows how four so different people can come together (not always without miscommunications and disagreements). Spock has a mentoring role to the group, which I just love. (Because you know he spent a lot of time very logically trying to figure out how to interact within a human-dominated situation.) I could quite happily have this as canon.

Author's Summary: Nyota liked her roommate just fine until she met her.
My Notes: This is a story about culture shock and taboos and fitting in and such. It's lovely and really well-written.

Story: The Ransom
Author: ninhursag (writing journal: vaingirlfic)
Fandom, etc.: Star Trek Reboot, Kirk/Gaila, R, 1 LJ post
Contains: Discussion of child abuse and slavery. Not explicit.
Author's Summary: Pirate!Gaila kidnaps teenage!Kirk for ransom. Hijinks ensue.
My Notes: I love Gaila and Kirk together (either shippy or BFFy), they work so well together, and ninhursag has done a wonderful job of showing us this here. In this story Gaila has very little practical knowledge of Earthling behaviour and is thus constantly being confused in the way that Kirk and how he was raised does and doesn't line up with what she read in a book. The AU is well-done and feels real.

Story: A Sexy Think Tank

Author's Summary: Gaila does not get her new roommate at all. They've been at school 3 whole weeks now, and she hasn't had sex with anyone. Not even once. She wonders if she should do something. Sex is as important as food, after all. If her roommate were anorexic, she should definitely try to help. Sex anorexia (sexorexia?) is probably just as bad and life-threatening. Plus, it seems to put her roommate in a really bad mood. The situation definitely calls for action. But what should she do?
My Notes: Gaila and Uhura and roommates with culture shock and learning how to fit in together. One of the things that I love about this fic is Spock giving advice on humans and social mores. In this fic Nyota and Gaila end up more in that roommate-truce sort of place than BFF, which is certainly one possibility given how different they are.

SPN fic recs, week 13, Possessions and going evil (Halloween again)

I had thought that my previous set of recs exhausted the Halloween-y fics I've read in this fandom, but evidently not. There's an absolutely ridiculous number of fics here. (New challenge to self: be roughly this prolific in reccing things in other fandoms too.) I'd say half-ish of these are on-theme, possibly more if you include the stories involving ghosts. Some of these I really don't want to spoil the reveal, so my comments+author's summary might not be enough to specify which story they are. In those cases, I've included a 'the one where' bit, where I roughly summarise the story's key points for myself. If you adore fic spoilers, feel free to read them.

Reposting my recs from spngenlove week 11. I actually stuck mostly to the theme this week. This rec set includes the single scariest story I have read in quite a while.

Summary: This is the saga of Puppy versus the Tall Things - in which Puppy learns that all things taller than he is are a crime against nature and should not be tolerated.
Reccer's Comments: It's on-theme because poor Sammy is being haunted by things which are taller than him! Oh noes! But utterly off-theme because this is a cracky humour piece. A fun bit of silliness.
Reccer's Caveats: Passing references to wincest in a breaking-the-fourth-wall sort of way.

Reccer's Comments: The requester (this was written for this year's spn_summergen) asked for "a classic horror story" and the author drew inspiration from the Twilight Zone. I found this story interesting and not too creepy (for me) and yet I could easily see the creepiness for Dean. In true TZ fashion, there isn't a tidy resolution provided by the author, but one may draw ones own conclusions if one wishes. Plotline for those who would prefer to have spoilers: Dean thinks Sam is transforming. No one else seems to ever notice anything odd about Sam. Is it all in his head or not?

Title: You Know Who You Are

Summary: Thoughts from a meat suit.
Reccer's Comments: This fic is always slightly unsettling. It's a good reminder that even while Ruby may have been helping Sam, she still was a demon and demons aren't very nice.
Reccer's Caveats: Author says 'some Sam/Ruby'. It's there but very minor and not at all a thrust of the story.

Title: Disinterment

Rating: R for language, violence and gore.

Summary: Dean's current and former lives collide a little too hard and jeopardize everything - his career, his family, and his life.
Reccer's Comments: The genre the author lists for this story is 'horror, drama', which is entirely accurate. It is a very well-told tale but it creeped me out so very, very much that I spent the next two hours with the fluffiest things (both blankets and stories) that I could find. This is possibly somewhat of a personal thing, so you might not find the monster as creepy as I do but I found it utterly frightening. Details of the monster: The monster kills a person and then takes over their flesh, leaving behind only the skeleton. The monster has to move on to new victims periodically as the flesh-suits decay. OMFG, CREEPY!
Reccer's Caveats: Future-fic, both boys have children and have a wife/girlfriend/ex-wife sort of person. But as far as I remember, the focus of the story is not romantic in nature and thus qualifies as gen. (NB: I did not reread this story before making this rec.)
Series: This is part of [Salvation] future-fic AU, but it can be read without knowledge of the verse. The masterverse page has a number of codas for this particular story. The verse itself is great (and has a truly epic number of stories in it), with well-fleshed out OCs and a comparatively happy post-hunting (well, mostly post-hunting) life for Sam and Dean. Stories are marked with pairings as needed.

Recs for vids I've been watching obsessively lately

I've been watching these vids repeatedly for much of this week. It's been one of those weeks where these stupid little things keep happening and adding up and you feel redicolous by feeling put out by the whole thing, but you just really want to tear out your hair and yell a lot. So these have been comfort-vids for me right now. I don't know why, exactly, but I figure, any vid I can stand to watch somewhere between twenty-five and fifty times in a five day period I may as well rec. You needn't wait for a bad day to watch them though! I do love them even when I'm not in a mood :)

I love the longing that Kirk feels and from the looks of Uhura and Spock I'm convinced that they all end up together. (For extra fun, I quite enjoy watching this vid and thinking about where those shots were in the movie-- it gives me a sense of how one can clip things to say things other than what precisely was shown on the screen.)

My Notes: This is one of those vids I had to watch a bunch before I felt that I was understanding what the vidder was trying to do. She says "This is my love letter to Stargate Atlantis. It is also a letter about how Stargate: Atlantis drives me fucking crazy." I like it because it reminds me that the situation in Pegasus is much more complicated than the show often portrayed it and that things are not always simple and easy and such in a war zone.

I have no real idea what I'm doing with formatting these vid recs, so if you have suggestions, please let me know.
