Repost of my spngenlove recs, week 1

For my policy on things such as spoilers, warning, and ratings, please [see my policy post].

I've got modly permission from [livejournal.com profile] spngenlove to post this, so yay.

There's a new comm [livejournal.com profile] spngenlove specifically for gen fanwork in Supernatural. This is yay for me because the main pairing in the fandom is sibling incest (Sam/Dean) and that kind of weirds me out. The comm does weekly rec sets which makes me happy, because I like recs and reccing. These are a little more 'off the top of my head' than my rec lists generally are and they're differently formatted than my standard because I'm c&p'ing what I submit to the comm. I might slightly elaborate on what I submit to the comm or I might not, depending on how talkative I feel when I make the post.

So here's my recs from [week 1]. Theme: no theme.

Title: Conversational Winchester for Trolls
Author: [livejournal.com profile] eloise_bright
Rating: pg13
Word Count: 1850 words
Contains: There be spoilers for the story of 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'. And gratuitous Angel and Matrix references.
Reader's Summary: The three Winchesters meet up with a troll under a bridge.
Reccer's Comments: Character studies of all three Winchesters wrapped in a delicious crack package. I read this very early on in my reading of SPN fic and it turned out to be useful in introducing me to the characters as well as very funny.

Title: Everything I Know About Marine Biology I Learned from My Brother.
Author: [livejournal.com profile] kroki_refur
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 2,060
Contains: No sea-cucumber molestation involved! Spoilers only for amusing facts about several marine animals.
Summary: Dean discovers the other use for the internet. [i.e., researching stuff]
Reccer's Comments: Sam has run afoul of a witch's curse and keeps transforming into different marine animals. Dean spends his time researching the transformations and just generally being Dean.

Title: Voice Mail [the rest is silence]
Author: [livejournal.com profile] blacklid
Rating: pg13
Word Count: 235
Contains: (skip) canon character death, spoilers for 3.16
Reader's Summary: Sam checking his voice mail.
Reccer's Comments: Short but packs a punch. (The punch, by the way, is delivered directly to the heart. Have a fun fic to read right after this.) A wonderful look at Sam. I would love to see this as a podfic done with several voices and beeping sounds.

Title: Sunday Morning Coming Down
Author: [livejournal.com profile] kellifer_fic
Rating: PG
Word Count: 1,772 words
Contains: Spoilers for the Pilot.
Summary: Mary was the one to survive, Sam to hunt and Dean to leave. (Dabbling in the Reverse 'verse)
Reccer's Comments: The author has done a lovely job with the above premise. This might well be my favourite 'Mary survives and John doesn't' fic. Dean's motivations for leaving are believable, the tension between Dean and Sam make my heart wince in sympathy (but it is a parallel of the pilot! It'll be okay by the end). Things are flipped but the characters still remain true to themselves.

Title: Everyday Heroes
Author: [livejournal.com profile] geminigrl11
Rating: pg13
Word Count: 2900
Contains: (skip) Tornado damage discussed, and an OC has cancer
Summary: What is the measure of a man? Sometimes, it's found in the midst of epic struggle. Sometimes, it's in the spaces in between.
Reccer's Comments: This story actually spawned three other stories, and I'm reccing all of them. (I read kroki-refur's spin-off 'Blood and Ink' before this story, and I actually recommend doing the same.) Sam and Dean are heroes and good people because that is who they are, the fighting monsters is just one aspect. And they can't be fighting monsters all the time. Here's a story about those in-between times. I've read it several times and sometimes it makes me cry from the sweet.

Title: Blood and Wine are Red
Author: [livejournal.com profile] kroki_refur
Rating: pg13
Word Count: 1900 words
Contains: Spoilers to Nightshifter.
Summary: Eventually, one of those boys is going to get caught.
Reccer's Comments: Sam is caught, this is on national TV, and people react across the nation. Sam is in the story very, very little (Dean even less so), but that doesn't matter because the purpose of the story is to look at the lives they touched and how those people react to the news of Sam-alleged-multiple-murderer. I read this before I read the story it was based on, which meant that the background for the people that the boys helped in that story was unknown to me, whereas I knew about the background of those they helped in canon (and this felt right to me.) If you read one story on this list, read this one.

Title: Through the eyes of a child
Author: [livejournal.com profile] geminigrl11 and [livejournal.com profile] kalyw
Rating: G
Word Count: 2700
Contains: none.
Summary: A chance meeting brings back reflections of the past.
Reccer's Comments: This story is set in the town with the boy in the grocery store. Sam keeps running into the boy and his sister, which serves as a catalyst for Sam to reflect upon Dean caring for him as a child. There is a lovely note of hope/love throughout the story. The analogy between the children in the story and Sam and Dean is a little hit-you-over-the-head by the end, but as Sam is mulling over his childhood it is to be expected.

Title: Saving People...
Author: [livejournal.com profile] dolimir_k
Rating: G
Word Count: 1,593
Contains: (skip) Cancer surviver in remission.
Summary: Are you an angel, Dean?
Reccer's Comments: This is Annie and Dean spending one day together. (He arrives with an armful of daisies, which is just a perfect start to a story). The day spent goofing around charges both their batteries. Lovely and sweet, good characterisation.

As always, please point out corrections/additions (especially podfics or other transformative works) to what I've written here.
